Transforming lives is at the heart of what we do. Each team member at CBER honour this by volunteering their time, resources and expertise for free. This means that all funds donated to CBER go where they’re most needed – to funding life changing surgery and research for those suffering from brain tumours and epilepsy.
We are forever grateful for the generosity and vision of our founding supporters, the late Colin Bernard McKenna, the McKenna Family, and the Warrnambool community. Without their relentless support, the Victorian Centre for Brain and Epilepsy Research (CBER) would not have been founded.
Colin McKenna (1950–2024) was not only a pioneering businessman and philanthropist, but a man of deep integrity and community spirit. From humble beginnings on a dairy farm near Warrnambool, Colin built The Midfield Group into one of Australia’s leading meat processing companies while never losing sight of his commitment to giving back. His family and community have driven the foundation of this charity, with the hope that the legacy of his entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic would inspire medical research into improving treatment options for glioblastoma. Through his generous contributions, and the unwavering support of the McKenna Family, we are now able to drive forward critical research and treatment initiatives in brain cancer and epilepsy. Colin passed away from a disseminated glioblastoma in 2024, and at CBER we honour his memory and remain committed to carrying forward his remarkable spirit of compassion, innovation, and service.
